This is the third volume in the series on GAM-Global Art and the Museum, a research project initiated by Hans Belting and Peter Weibel of the ZKM Center for Art and Media Technology Karlsruhe. The goal of the project is to analyze how globalization has affected the situation of art museums, the art market, and the field of art criticism. Besides case studies of individual artists and scenes, Global Studies outlines the histories of regional art practices, exhibitions, and "contemporary" ideologies. Numerous essays by international scholars create a foundation for a discussion of interdisciplinary social sciences, humanities, and history. In addition, the richly illustrated volume contains brief analyses of selected art institutions from around the world.

Der vorliegende Band ist der dritte in einer Reihe zu dem Forschungsprojekt »GAM - Global Art and the Museum«, das von Hans Belting und Peter Weibel am ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe initiiert wurde. Ziel des Projektes ist es, die Situation der Kunstmuseen, des Kunstmarkts sowie der Kunstkritik unter dem Aspekt der Globalisierung zu analysieren. Neben Fallstudien zu einzelnen künstlerischen Positionen und Szenen präsentiert Global Studies historische Abrisse zu regionalen Kunstpraktiken, zur Ausstellungsgeschichte und zu Ideologien des »Zeitgenössischen«. Zahlreiche Essays von internationalen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern bilden die Grundlage, um das Thema interdisziplinär zwischen Sozial-, Geistes- und Geschichtswissenschaften zu diskutieren. Ergänzend gibt der Band mit zahlreichen farbigen Abbildungen und kurzen Analysen Einblicke in ausgewählte Kunstinstitutionen in aller Welt.
