Efforts are being made to revitalize our Nakoda language and this book is intended to help learners enjoy basic words.
Vicki Bisbee is an enrolled member of the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes in northeastern Montana. She has lived there for over 50 years and graduated from Poplar High School. Ken Ryan gave her the Assiniboine name Shunk Togaja Wiya (Gray Wolf Woman) in 1996. Vicki received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Northern Montana College. After retirement from Wolf Point School District as a school counselor, she met with Michael Turcott, a language instructor, and received an Assiniboine Dictionary that was published in 2018. Vicki decided to publish colorful language materials for all ages. There are variations of the Assiniboine language, mostly dependent on the area where Assiniboine live; but there is no right or wrong way to speak.
