The Vagabond Kid and his faithful companion Javier Pelaez are riding along and just wandering when they hear a cry for help. The Vagabond Kid cannot resist the call to any adventure and investigates the source of the pleas. He and Javier come across a young boy, Chad Burke, lying on the road. Chad is quite despondent and desperate, as he narrates the reason for his despair.
Chad narrates how he and his little dog, Goli had been walking along the path, minding their own business. Chad and Goli had done this so many times before, but today would be different. Chad narrates how two gruff-looking men on a wagon pass him by. One of the men asks for directions while the other sneaks up behind Chad and kidnaps Goli. Chad is confused and even shocked at these men's behavior, but there's nothing he can do. He's only a little boy, and the men easily overpower Chad and take Goli.
The Vagabond Kid finds it strange that two adults would even bother to take a small dog from a defenseless boy. He decides to investigate and follows the wagon of the two men that had taken Goli. It's a fresh trail, and the Vagabond Kid easily catches up to the two dog kidnappers. He doesn't know it yet, but these two men and their other cohorts are after lost treasure, lost treasure that is somehow connected to Goli.
