This drama surrounds Kitiona Tuafa. Kitiona's struggles and ingenious tactical sense are interwoven throughout the book.

Kitiona investigates her family's death in American Samoa. There, Kitiona uses her ingenuity to prove her doubts. Several attempts are made on her life. Through a series of events, Kitiona becomes part of a team that helps illuminate her haunting mystery.

She goes to San Francisco, home of Amerastar, the parent corporation of the Motorhead factory for whom her father worked. During her quest she dodges attempts on her life because she is asking pointed question searching for the truth about her family's death.

Ben Green, a former attorney, befriends Kitiona. They team up to investigate what happened to her family. They go after Amerastar and a politician, Senator Bonni Giardina.

Four law students, Mac, Jimmy, Juan and Carol attend Hastings Law School. They get involved with Kitiona and Ben through a series of misadventures. Together with two of Ben's old contacts, they investigate the fire that killed Kitiona's family. They investigate the fire's cause with the effects rippling to all concerned.
