Kae-ahn-shae is from a remote village in Ekka Ka. Dissatisfied with the way her life is going, she leaves home. Her first attempts at starting a new, more successful life aren't any more satisfying than what she left behind. When another young female asks her to travel north and go into battle together, Kae is intrigued. They work to learn each other's language, the arts of war and administration, and how to deal with politics as they become friends. Their start on the battlefield is rocky. When they're paired with another duo also having problems, things become complicated.
