Not much is known about Homer, who was considered by the ancient Greeks to be the greatest epic poet for his works, The Iliad and The Odyssey, two poems that have had a lasting influence on Western literature. Samuel Butler (1835-1902) was an English novelist and critic, best known for the novels Erewhon (1872) and The Way of All Flesh (1903). Butler also examined Christian orthodoxy, evolutionary thought, and Italian art, and crafted a famous prosed translation of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey epic poems (1900) that are still consulted today. Andrew Lynn teaches literature and writing at Barnard College. He is currently at work on a book about musical listening, silent reading, and the nineteenth-century novel.
