Sophie J. Bakri, M.D., is the chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Professor of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, an award made in honor of Robert R. Waller, M.D. A vitreoretinal surgeon, Dr. Bakri specializes in the medical and surgical management of complex retinal disorders. She treats several retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, central serous retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion, using intravitreal medications, laser photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy and cell-based therapies. Dr. Bakri is widely published in the field of retina and participates in national ophthalmology leadership and editorial boards. She is also deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of ophthalmologists and advancing research that directly improves patient outcomes.
