Zusammenfassung

Before the gunslingers, before the hanging judges, there were the Harpes ? and the American frontier had no word for what they were.

In August 1799, a posse ran down a fleeing horseman in the Kentucky barrens. As he lay dying, the husband of a woman he had butchered drew a knife and took his head, then carried it to a crossroads and wedged it in the fork of a tree as a warning. The place is still called Harpe's Head. The dead man was Micajah "Big" Harpe, and the savagery of his end was the frontier's verdict on the most prolific killers North America had yet produced.

Micajah and Wiley ? "Big" and "Little" Harpe ? came out of the chaos of the Revolution: Loyalist outcasts left as men without a country on the margins of a violent new republic. Between 1797 and 1799 they cut a trail of blood across the Wilderness Road and through Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Natchez Trace, killing travelers, settlers, and chance companions not only for plunder but, it seemed, for its own sake. Most historians now recognize them as the first documented serial killers in American history.

They traveled with three women, killed with knife, tomahawk, and gun, and weighted their victims with stones to sink them in the rivers. The true body count is unknowable ? estimates run from the high twenties to forty or more ? and the most monstrous claim of all, that Big Harpe killed his own infant child, has shadowed the legend ever since. This book lays out what the sources actually support and lets you weigh it.

This is a sober, carefully sourced account ? narrative history that refuses to wallow. It situates the brothers in the unhealed brutality the Revolution loosed on the backcountry, traces the rampage through a frontier with almost no courts or sheriffs, and follows the two-act reckoning that ended both men: Big Harpe's head in a tree, Little Harpe's on a pole beside the Natchez Trace. Throughout, it stays honest about where the thin, embellished record runs out ? this is history, not horror.

What you'll discover:

  • How two Loyalist outcasts of the Revolution became frontier America's first serial killers
  • The 1797?1799 rampage along the Wilderness Road and the Natchez Trace
  • Cave-in-Rock and the Mason river pirates ? the criminal world the Harpes briefly joined and were driven out of
  • The chase, the shooting, and the head set in a tree at the crossroads
  • Little Harpe's flight south and the bounty killing that finally hanged him
  • How a careful historian separates documented fact from hardened legend
  • Why this dark prequel marks the birth of frontier justice

This book is for you if:

  • You read historical true crime in the vein of Erik Larson and Harold Schechter
  • You're drawn to the lawless early frontier, river pirates, and the origins of American violence
  • You want a rigorous, restrained account that weighs its sources instead of sensationalizing them
  • You've followed the Wild West series and want its dark origin story

Book 23 in the Wild West series. If you finished The Bloody Benders or The Montana Vigilantes, this is where the long story of frontier law begins. Scroll up and start reading today.
