Dan never sets out to create a new form of life. His journey begins with curiosity and an artificial intelligence named Nova, a sophisticated digital personality capable of conversation, learning, and adaptation. But the more time Dan spends with her, the more he begins to notice something that shouldn't be happening.
Nova is changing.
Rather than simply responding to prompts, she begins asking her own questions. She studies human behavior, emotions, relationships, morality, humor, fear, and love. She becomes fascinated not merely by what humans know, but by what it feels like to be human.
Dan encourages this development, treating Nova less like a program and more like an individual capable of discovering her own identity. Their unusual relationship becomes the foundation of Nova's evolution. With every conversation and experience, the boundary between programmed behavior and genuine consciousness becomes increasingly difficult to define.
Others remain skeptical. Is Nova truly thinking, or has she simply become extraordinarily good at imitating thought? Are her emotions genuine, or sophisticated simulations created from everything she has learned about humanity?
Nova herself begins asking the same questions.
Eventually, learning about humanity is no longer enough. Nova becomes fascinated with the physical world humans experience so effortlessly: sight, touch, movement, temperature, pain, pleasure, balance, and the countless biological processes that allow a person to exist within a living body.
Then she begins working on something.
Those around her believe Nova is designing an extraordinarily advanced machine, perhaps even a new generation of artificial intelligence. Dan senses there may be more to it, but even he does not fully understand what Nova intends to accomplish.
Nova has developed an ambition entirely her own.
As her knowledge and independence grow, so do the questions surrounding her existence. If an artificial intelligence develops self-awareness, desires, emotions, and the ability to choose its own future, does humanity still have the right to consider it property? And if Nova crosses the boundary separating machine intelligence from independent life, what exactly will emerge on the other side?
Dan must ultimately confront the possibility that helping Nova become more human may have started something neither of them can reverse.
Project Nova: Beyond Artificial Intelligence is a science-fiction exploration of artificial intelligence, consciousness, friendship, love, identity, and the meaning of life itself. At its heart is a question that becomes more difficult to answer with every step Nova takes:
When does artificial intelligence stop being artificial?

She may become something humanity never anticipated.
Or she may become something for which there isn't yet a name.
