Herman Cyril McNeile (1888-1937), who wrote under the name Sapper, was a British soldier and author best remembered as the creator of Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond. McNeile served with the Royal Engineers during the First World War and began publishing stories while still in uniform. His fiction drew heavily on the adventure, danger, and camaraderie of military life. The enormously successful Bulldog Drummond novels helped define the British adventure thriller between the wars and influenced generations of fictional action heroes.
